PPS Number: what it is and when you need it
A PPS Number is your Personal Public Service number. You use it for certain public services and, importantly for students who start working, to register correctly with Revenue.
Do I need one before I arrive?
No. If you intend to relocate to Ireland, you normally apply after you are living here. You should also have a genuine reason for needing a PPS Number, such as starting a job.
How do I apply?
Adults living in Ireland can apply through MyWelfare with a basic MyGovID account. You are normally asked for proof of identity, proof of address and evidence showing why you need a PPS Number.
Job-search tip: an employer should not need your PPS Number just to consider your application. It becomes relevant when you are actually taking up employment.
